Training & speaking

Before you respond, make a Perception Check.

The behavior you see is only part of the story.

What looks like defiance may be overwhelm. What appears to be disengagement may be self-protection. And the young person labeled “difficult” may be navigating a world that was never designed for the way their brain works.

Ben helps teams pause at the moment when assumption usually takes over—and become curious about what they may not yet understand.

Training options

The right experience for your team.

Every organization enters from a different starting point. Sessions can be adapted around available time, participant roles, learning goals, and the situations your team encounters.

60 minutes

Focused Session

A compelling introduction with a clear foundation, guided reflection, and practical takeaways participants can use immediately.

90 minutes

Interactive Workshop

More room for discussion, realistic scenarios, participant questions, and deeper application to the work.

Half-day

Applied Experience

Participants move beyond introduction and into practice through scenarios, shared challenges, and facilitated conversation.

Full-day

Immersive Learning

Instruction, storytelling, reflection, application, and organizational planning combine into a deeper learning experience.

In-person and virtual

Ben prefers the connection created through in-person facilitation. Virtual delivery is also available when it better serves an organization’s location, schedule, or accessibility needs.

The facilitation experience

Not another training people forget by Monday.

Ben teaches the way people actually learn: through stories they remember, questions they continue thinking about, and practical ideas they can use when the next difficult moment arrives.

“You do not change practice by giving people more information alone. You change it by helping them see something they can no longer unsee.”
STORY-DRIVEN

Personal experiences and recognizable situations make complex ideas immediate and human.

CREATIVE BY DESIGN

Storytelling, role-playing games, collaborative problem-solving, and adult-learning practice invite people into the work.

CHALLENGING WITHOUT SHAMING

Participants can question assumptions, recognize impact, and take responsibility without the room becoming a test.

BUILT FOR THE REAL WORLD

The goal is a useful lens participants can carry into programs, classrooms, meetings, and difficult conversations.

The perspective behind the work

Lived, educational, and practice-based expertise.

Ben is an educator, youth-development practitioner, training designer, and facilitator—not a medical doctor, therapist, neuroscientist, or diagnostic professional. His work does not provide medical advice, clinical assessment, diagnosis, or treatment.

Ben’s expertise is practical and educational: helping adults examine how they interpret behavior, better understand neurodivergent experiences, and translate that understanding into more thoughtful, responsive practice.

The work is informed by his lived experience as an Autistic and ADHD adult; his Bachelor of Science in Social Work from Western Michigan University; more than two decades in youth development; and continued professional learning in autism, trauma-informed practice, behavior support, facilitation, and adult learning.

His experience represents one neurodivergent perspective—not every Autistic or ADHD person’s experience. Participants are encouraged to remain curious, seek multiple perspectives, listen to the individuals they support, and consult qualified professionals when clinical expertise is needed.

Experience behind the method

Built through more than two decades of doing the work.

Ben’s career began in 2002 when he joined City Year and began working with middle-school students through social-emotional learning.

He was drawn to that work partly because of his own experience moving through K–12 education—often feeling out of step, misunderstood, or expected to succeed in environments that did not work naturally for the way his brain was wired.

At the time, Ben did not yet know that he was Autistic and had ADHD. Those diagnoses would come later, providing language and context for experiences that had already shaped his instincts as an educator.

What began as a desire to help young people navigate school became a career dedicated to building programs, developing staff, designing learning experiences, and helping adults look beyond their first interpretation of behavior.

The Perception Check Method did not begin as a theory searching for an audience. It grew from years of seeing what happens when young people are misunderstood—and what becomes possible when adults learn to look again.

Bring the Perception Check to your team

Built with you—not simply delivered to you.

Every engagement begins with a conversation. Ben takes time to understand your organization, your audience, the strengths your team already brings, the challenges they are encountering, and what you hope will be different afterward.

The core purpose remains grounded and consistent, but the learning experience does not need to feel copied and pasted from another room.

Continued partnership

The training is the beginning of the campaign—not a one-shot.

A single session can introduce a new lens and create important conversations. Meaningful change takes practice. Depending on an organization’s needs, continued partnership may include follow-up conversations, additional learning, curated resources, practical next steps, and a longer-term professional-development pathway.

Some organizations need one focused experience. Others are ready to build an ongoing campaign. Ben will work with you to determine what meaningful continued support could look like.
